Unlike conventional linear mRNA, circular RNA forms a circular shape because the 3' and 5' ends of RNA including internal ribosomal entry site (IRES) and RNA encoding target proteins are connected together. Its circular structure makes it more highly resistant to RNase-mediate degradation than linear mRNA. As a result, there are critical advantages of circular RNA in production, storage, purification, and protein expression over conventional linear mRNA. Therefore, circular RNA is next generation of therapeutic modality with promising potential to treat various human diseases including cancers, infectious, autoimmune, and degenerative diseases.
